The Relationship

Everlane sells its soul to Shein. The internet has so many feelings. Episode 1.

We had a whole other episode ready to go. And then Everlane got sold to Shein on a Saturday and we were both staring at our phones by 7am, because it turns out fifteen years of ‘radical transparency’¹ gets you a new parent company whose name you have been using as a cautionary tale since 2018.

And the part that keeps us up at night is not the acquisition itself. It is the women who believed in that brand. Who paid more, bought less², and felt like that choice meant something -- like they had found a small but real way to participate in something better than the default. Who built part of their identity around trying to do the right thing inside a system that makes doing the right thing genuinely, structurally hard. When a brand like that gets sold on a Saturday morning to the company it was supposed to be the antidote to, it does not feel like a business transaction. It feels like the system just reminded you who is actually in charge³.

The brand itself was the license. One ethical purchase didn't just offset future behaviour. It reframed the entire act of consuming as participation in something corrective.

That is the conversation we are having in this episode. Not whether Everlane was perfect -- it was not, and we get into that -- but whether any of this was ever going to end differently given the structure, the incentives, and the people who ended up holding the cheque. The hot take is that sustainable consumption is dead.

We think the more interesting question is whether it ever had the architecture to survive in the first place⁴.

1Trademarked. Genuinely trademarked. We will get into that.
² The $68 t-shirt was doing a lot of work for a lot of people and we say that with complete sincerity and zero judgment.
³ The CEO's response was "Everlane remains Everlane." We have thoughts.
⁴ Spoiler: it did not.
